Past Narratives & Future Forms
Past simple vs progressive vs perfect in a story, and choosing between will, going to and progressive futures.
Step 1 — Learn
Concept, rules, model examples and the mistakes STEP repeats every year.
Concept
In a narrative, the past progressive sets the background, the past simple gives the main events, and the past perfect goes back to an earlier action. For the future, will = instant decision/prediction, be going to = plan or evidence, present progressive = fixed arrangement, present simple = timetable.
