Present Progressive

Concept

We use the present progressive (present continuous) for four core ideas: actions happening at this moment, temporary situations around now, changing or developing trends, and fixed future arrangements. It describes activity in progress, not permanent facts.

Form

Affirmative

Subject + am / is / are + verb + ing

Negative

Subject + am / is / are + not + verb + ing

Question

Am / Is / Are + subject + verb + ing ?

The be verb carries the tense; the main verb always keeps -ing.

Third-person spelling rules

• Most verbs → + ing

  read → reading · study → studying

• Verb ending in silent -e → drop e + ing

  write → writing · take → taking

• One-syllable CVC → double the last consonant

  sit → sitting · run → running

• Verb ending in -ie → -ying

  lie → lying · die → dying

Common STEP traps

• ❌ She is teach English now.

  ✅ She is teaching English now.

  After am / is / are the main verb must take -ing.

• ❌ He teaching at the institute this week.

  ✅ He is teaching at the institute this week.

  The be verb can never be dropped.

• ❌ I am knowing the answer.

  ✅ I know the answer.

  State verbs (know, believe, understand, own, need) are not used in the progressive.

• ❌ Water is boiling at 100 °C.

  ✅ Water boils at 100 °C.

  A permanent general truth takes the present simple, not the progressive.

• ❌ She is writeing her essay.

  ✅ She is writing her essay.

  Drop the silent -e before adding -ing.
