Word Order in Statements

Concept

English statements follow a fixed order: Subject + Verb + Object. Extra information normally follows the pattern manner → place → time. Nothing is allowed between the verb and its direct object.

ترتيب الجملة الإنجليزية ثابت: فاعل ثم فعل ثم مفعول، ثم الكيفية فالمكان فالزمان، ولا يُفصل بين الفعل ومفعوله.

Rules & forms

• Subject + Verb + Object (SVO)

  • • Ahmed reads the newspaper.
  • • The students finished the project.

• Extra information: manner → place → time

  الترتيب: الكيفية ثم المكان ثم الزمان.

  • • She spoke politely to the teacher yesterday.
  • • We studied hard at the library last night.

• Adverbs of frequency go before the main verb but after the verb be.

  • • He always arrives early.
  • • He is always early.
  • • They have never visited Makkah.

• Do not separate the verb from its direct object with an adverb.

  • • She speaks English fluently. (not: She speaks fluently English.)

• Adjective order: opinion → size → age → shape → colour → origin → material + noun

  • • a beautiful small old wooden box
  • • a large red Saudi flag

Common mistakes & STEP traps

• ❌ I like very much this book.

  ✅ I like this book very much.

  Nothing comes between the verb and its object.

• ❌ She goes always to school early.

  ✅ She always goes to school early.

  Frequency adverbs come before the main verb.

• ❌ We visited last year Makkah.

  ✅ We visited Makkah last year.

  Time expressions come after the object.

• ❌ He plays well football.

  ✅ He plays football well.

  Manner adverbs follow the object.
