Word Order in Questions

Concept

Direct questions invert the subject and the auxiliary: (Question word) + auxiliary + subject + base verb. After do / does / did the main verb always returns to its base form. Indirect and embedded questions keep normal statement order.

في السؤال المباشر يتقدم الفعل المساعد على الفاعل ويعود الفعل الأصلي إلى صورته المجردة، أما السؤال غير المباشر فيحتفظ بترتيب الجملة الخبرية.

Rules & forms

• (Wh-) + do/does/did + subject + base verb

  • • Does he work here?
  • • Where did they go?
  • • Do you understand?

• With be, modals and perfect tenses, invert the verb itself.

  • • Are you ready?
  • • Can she swim?
  • • Have they finished?

• Subject questions need no auxiliary.

  إذا كانت أداة الاستفهام هي الفاعل فلا نستخدم فعلاً مساعداً.

  • • Who wrote this letter?
  • • What happened yesterday?

• Indirect questions keep statement order: no inversion, no do/does/did.

  • • Could you tell me where the office is?
  • • I wonder what time the class starts.

Common mistakes & STEP traps

• ❌ Does he works here?

  ✅ Does he work here?

  After does the verb returns to the base form.

• ❌ Where you are going?

  ✅ Where are you going?

  The auxiliary must come before the subject in a direct question.

• ❌ Do you know where is the bank?

  ✅ Do you know where the bank is?

  Indirect questions keep statement word order.

• ❌ Who did write this?

  ✅ Who wrote this?

  Subject questions need no auxiliary.
