Reading passage

Paragraph 1: Many coastal cities face increasing pressure from flooding during severe storms.

Paragraph 2: One approach is to restore wetlands near urban areas. Wetlands can absorb some storm water and reduce the force of waves before they reach buildings and roads.

Paragraph 3: Wetland restoration is not a complete solution, however. In densely developed areas, there may be too little available land, so cities often combine natural barriers with engineered flood defenses.
